The Heart
Located in the center of the chest, the heart sits between the two lungs, on top of the diaphragm - the breathing muscle seperating the chest from the abdomen.
X
Left Lung
The left lung is smaller than the right lung, and it is indented and shaped by the heart, which points towards the left side of the chest.
X
Right Lung
The right lung contains three lobes (upper, middle, and lower) and is larger than the left lung which contains two lobes (upper and middle).
X
Great Vessels
The large arteries and veins that come out of and go into the heart are known as the great vessels.
X
Superior Vena Cava
This large vein drains unoxygenated blood from the upper body into the right side of the heart.
X
Right Atrium
This is the upper chamber of the right side of the heart that collects oxygen poor blood from the body in preparation for the journey through the lungs.
X
Inferior Vena Cava
This large vein drains unoxygenated blood from the lower body into the right side of the heart.
X
Right Ventricle
This muscular chamber of the right side of the heart pumps oxygen depleted blood to the lungs to be saturated with oxygen.
X
Left Ventricle
This muscular chamber of the left side of the heart pumps oxygen rich blood to all parts of the body except the lungs.
X
Left Atrium
This is the upper chamber of the left side of the heart that collects oxygen rich blood from the body in preparation for the journey through the left ventricle and out to the rest of the body.
X
Ascending Aorta
This is the first part of the large artery that comes out of the left ventricle, delivering oxygen rich blood to the body. This segment gives rise to the coronary arteries, which feed the heart muscle itself.
X
Aortic Arch
The second segment of the aorta courses from front to back, creating an arch. The arteries to the arms, head, and brain arise from the top of this arch.
X
Main Pulmonary Artery
This large artery carries oxygen poor blood out of the right ventricle before splitting into right and left pulmonary arteries.
X
Left Pulmonary Artery
Carries oxygen poor blood to the left lung.
X
Right Pulmonary Artery
Carries oxygen poor blood to the right lung.
X
Innominate Artery
Delivers oxygen rich blood to the right side of the head and brain and to the right arm.
X
Left Common Carotid Artery
Carries oxygen rich blood to the left side of the head and brain.
X
Left Subclavian Artery
Carries oxygen rich blood to the left arm.
X
Left Pulmonary Veins
Delivers oxygen rich blood into the left atrium from the left lung.
X
Right Pulmonary Veins
Delivers oxygen rich blood into the left atrium from the right lung.
X
Mitral Valve
This seperates the left atrium from the left ventricle, preventing blood from being ejected backward from the left ventricle, which could cause breathing difficulties.
X
Tricuspid Valve
This seperates the right atrium from the right ventricle, preventing blood from being ejected backward from the right ventricle, which could cause swelling in the abdomen and legs.
X
Pulmonary Valve
This seperates the right ventricle from the pulmonary artery.
X
Aortic Valve
This seperates the left ventricle from the aorta. Blockage or leakage of this valve can cause heart failure.
X
Inter-ventricular Septum
This muscular wall divides the heart into the main pumping chambers (left and right ventricles supplying blood to the body and lungs, respectively).
X
Left Ventricular Chamber
The inside of the left ventricle, which pumps blood to all parts of the body except the lungs.
X
Right Ventricular Chamber
The inside of the right ventricle, which pumps dark, oxygen poor blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide.
X
Left Atrial Chamber
The inside of the left atrium, which collects oxygen rich blood from the lungs.
X
Right Atrial Chamber
The inside of the right atrium, which collects dark oxygen poor blood from the body.
